CALIFORNIA CITY, Kern County. — November 5, 2026. California City’s Measure J, labeled a city tax question on the ballot, has a clear preliminary No majority. Kern County’s November 4 election-night report lists 1,236 No votes (68.70%) and 563 Yes (31.30%), a 673-vote No advantage. This is an unofficial return, not the final certified legal outcome.

What the percentages do and don’t prove

The measure has 1,799 reported valid Yes/No selections. The 68.70% No share uses the choices for this question, rather than the entire town’s registered electorate. The precise tax rate, duration and authorized municipal spending would need to be read from the adopted measure text; a short results label should not be used to invent fiscal details.

The mayor has a separate tally

The county’s initial mayoral vote shows Isaac Barcelona with 1,066 votes (60.67%) against Marquette Hawkins’s 691 (39.33%). California58 already covers the mayoral race, which is not a referendum on the tax. Council and treasurer positions also have different ballots and reported totals.

The certification clock

Twelve of twelve California City precincts initially reported on the registrar’s dashboard, but additional valid mail and conditional ballots can still be checked during the canvass. Readers should use the county’s next official report to determine whether the No margin changes and should not call the result legally certified in advance.
